This is a compilation of the material we created for a video game that was never released, called Pinball Riders. We developed it together with the studio Hypergames, who were in charge of game design and development, while we focused on worldbuilding and art direction.

The game was set in a western retro-futuristic universe, where a kind of bounty hunter made a living by diving into wild pinball machines to retrieve the treasures hidden inside.

We developed that world with great attention to detail and depth. In addition to writing the story, we designed different types of technology, character archetypes, means of transportation, and maps. We also produced numerous concept drawings to support the creation of the game’s different levels. These explored settings, perspectives, the structural layout of the tables, and possible interactions between the ball and the environment.

A playable prototype of the game was eventually built to pitch the concept to publishers and distributors. Unfortunately, the project did not generate enough commercial interest and was eventually put on hold.

The game had a roguelike structure, with replayable runs and changing challenges in each attempt, in which players could collect and choose different tokens that granted them special abilities. Each pinball table was conceived as a duel between two characters, where the interaction of the ball with various elements of the table translated into attacks that would gradually drain one of the characters’ health bars.

For that prototype, we developed a comprehensive asset library including a large number of icons, characters, and environment elements. The color palette was crafted with great care. We wanted to blend the earthy tones of the western genre with neon hues that added a technological touch. We decided to use dual lighting, which gave the elements a distinctive glowing effect.
