CHRISTMAS LIGHTS PASSEIG DE SANT JOAN

We designed the Christmas lights in Passeig de Sant Joan in Barcelona. The boulevard runs between the Arc de Triomf and Plaza Tetuan and is home to several shops specialising in comics, the world of fantasy, and collectable toys. The surrounding neighbourhood has a notable Asian influence, both on account of the local community and the presence of many specialised shops. The visual language of our designs sought to honour the culture of the boulevard and neighbourhood by taking its inspiration from comics and Kawaii pop culture.

The design consisted of two elements; vignettes and icons. Hanging above the road, the themes of the vignettes were based on the more universal values of Christmas such as reuniting with loved ones, participation, and sharing. Referencing both the world of comics and Christmas, the icons were mounted above the pavement at various angles, inviting pedestrians to look up, possibly interacting with residents looking down from their balconies.
